It seems there’s no escaping Escape Rooms! A recent internet trawl I completed this morning suggests that, here in the UK, there are currently 285 companies operating Escape Rooms (sometimes also called Exit Games) operating from 387 venues. And this is almost certainly below the actual numbers as more and more open doors (before closing them on you and locking you in!)

So some simple maths here: in a nation with 69 cities, on average each of our cities is host to 5.6 Escape Room venues. That suggests to me that we may well still be some distance off saturation point. This is reinforced when taking a look at a review site like TripAdvisor. When I looked a staggering 9 out of the 10 top fun activities to do in London were Escape Rooms. Well done to the All England Lawn Tennis Club (Wimbledon) – at #8 – for breaking the monopoly. So Escape Rooms are clearly proving popular.

Are Escape Rooms a passing fad?

You will probably remember all those laser dome type places that opened up 10 to 15 years ago. Not too many survive today – though the better ones are still doing good business. Will the same happen with Escape Rooms? Or will they prove to have greater longevity? It’s very hard to say. The first wave of openings and popularity is done and dusted but if Escape Rooms can evolve offering great customer service and a truly immersive experience, I see no reason why the Escape Room story won’t have plenty distance still to run.
